Ashcroft near Aspen, Colorado is up at the end of the Castle Creek Valley. The aspen trees are amazing in the entire area. This small grove glows yellow against a pine forest of dark green. Morning light makes the golden leaves almost seem to burn with color. I found this image staring me in the face while waiting for another image in front of me to get the light I wanted!
Up in the Castle Creek Valley outside Aspen, Colorado there are literally millions of aspen trees in huge groves. This tiny grove is surrounded by a pine forest for a couple hundred yards on both sides of the hill it sits on. Really a stunning contrast between the dark green and the yellow of the trees which seem almost on fire. I was waiting on the light to come over the hill behind this shot and fill in the shadows a bit more on the scene I was actually there for, having scouted it earlier in the week. As I waited I looked left and saw the morning light just starting to fall across the trees from behind. The effect was as stunning in person as it is in this picture. Quickly I re aimed my tripod mounted camera, made a series of frames to assemble into a large stitched panorama and returned the camera to the first image. One has to be open to other things happening all around in early and late light. Change is continuous and dramatic lighting like this is fleeting.
This image has been reproduced at nearly eight feet in width and was stunning that large. You can see an installed image here and also a shot with my favorite CSR in it as I picked up the piece at my lab in Denver. Fun to see him for scale. I would print this image any way you like it is a stunner. My favorite media so far has been acrylic. Metal works well too for bringing out the vivid colors. Canvas while less vivid goes well with the textures in the trees.
